Los estadounidenses han incorporado la Navidad a todas sus expresiones artísticas, especialmente al cine y a la música. Muchas canciones navideñas se han convertido en auténticos clásicos. Un buen ejemplo es "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". Una canción que interpretó por primera vez Judy Garland en la película Cita en San Luís de 1944. El tema ha sido después versionado por infinidad de artistas (Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, James Taylor, Carpenters, Bing Crosby, Michael Bublé, Diana Krall, etc.). Os traigo dos versiones: la original de Judy Garland y una versión de la Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra con Wynton Marsalis y la colaboración especial de Cécile McLorin Salvant.

Americans have integrated Christmas into all their artistic expressions, especially cinema and music. Many Christmas songs have become authentic classics. "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is a good example. A song introduced by Judy Garland in the 1944 film "Meet Me in St. Louis". The theme has been later performed by a lot of artists (Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, James Taylor, Carpenters, Bing Crosby, Michael Bublé, Diana Krall, etc.). I give you two versions: Judy Garland's original and a cover by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and the special collaboration of Cécile McLorin Salvant.

Handel - Messiah (Marriner)

Hace unos días falleció Sir Neville Marriner, fundador de la Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. Tal vez uno de los directores y de las orquestas con más grabaciones discográficas de la historia. De hecho, el primer vinilo que tuve en mi vida fue un recopilatorio de grandes obras de la música clásica del sello EMI, en el que más de la mitad de las pistas las firmaban Marriner y la Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. También guardo un grato recuerdo de la banda sonora de la película Amadeus, grabada íntegramente por él y su orquesta. Gracias Maestro.

Sir Neville Marriner, founder of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, died a few days ago, He's perhaps one of the conductors who recorded more albums in history. In fact, the first vinyl I had in my life was an EMI label compilation of great works of classical music, in which more than a half of the tracks were performed by Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. I also have fond memories of Amadeu's film soundtrack, that was entirely recorded by Marriner and his orchestra. Thank you Maestro.

Kansas - Song For America + Lonely Street

Mucha gente conoce al grupo Kansas por la famosa "Dust In The Wind". Pero esta balada no es ni mucho menos representativa de la discografía de esta banda de magnífico rock sinfónico. Hoy os traigo dos de mis temas favoritos de Kansas: "Song For America", con el maravilloso toque de violín de Robby Steinhardt, y "Lonely Street", una especie de blues duro en el que Steve Walsh demuestra su poderío vocal.

Many people know the band Kansas thanks to the famous "Dust In The Wind". But this ballad is not at all representative of the discography of this great progressive rock band. Today I put forward to hear two of my favorite Kansas's songs: "Song For America" with the wonderful Robby Steinhardt's violin , and "Lonely Street", a kind of hard blues in which Steve Walsh demonstrates his vocal power.

Ella Fitzgerald - How High the Moon

En el jazz, se llama "scat" a un tipo de improvisación vocal con palabras y sílabas sin sentido o  incluso sin palabras. El scat es una técnica difícil que requiere cantantes con la habilidad de cantar melodías y ritmos improvisados usando la voz como un instrumento. Recordemos una de las canciones más emblemáticas del repertorio de Ella Fitzgerald, de cuya muerte se cumplen ahora 20 años.

In jazz, "scat singing" is a vocal improvisation with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables or without words at all. Scat singing is a difficult technique that requires singers with the ability to sing improvised melodies and rhythms using the voice as an instrument. Let us remember one of the most emblematic songs from the repertoire of Ella Fitzgerald, who died 20 years ago these days.

Soft Machine - A Certain Kind

Aún recuerdo aquel día en mi lejana juventud en que me desperté, puse la radio a oscuras y me encontré por casualidad la música de un extraño grupo al que no había oído en mi vida. Escuché la canción completa, aún medio dormido, sumido en la oscuridad. La experiencia sensorial fue casi psicodélica. Al finalizar la canción el locutor me presentó a Soft Machine. Horas después estaba comprándome el disco en una tienda de discos raros. Sube el volumen, apaga las luces y disfruta de esta canción.

I still remember that day in my youth in wich I woke up, I turned on the radio in the dark and I bumped into a strange music that I had never heard before. I listened to the entire song, still half asleep, plunged into darkness. The sensory experience was almost psychedelic. At the end of the song the announcer introduced Soft Machine to me. A few hours later I bought the album in a rare record collectors shop. Pump up the volume, turn off the lights and enjoy this song..

Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit

Jefferson Airplane was one of the flagship bands of the Californian psychedelic scene in the late 60's. "White Rabbit" is a song set in Alice in Wonderland that relates the strange effects of having some kind of mushroom, some pills that make you larger or smaller, or meeting a smoking caterpillar. Chet Baker - My Funny Valentine

Chet Baker grabó este tema por primera vez a principios de los 50. Sin embargo, mi versión favorita fue la primera que escuché una noche de radio, allá por finales de los 80, con un Chet al final de sus días, muy deteriorado ya por las drogas. Fue impactante para mí.

Chet Baker recorded this song for his first time in the early 50s. However, my favorite performance was wich I heard for my first time in a radio night in the late 80s. Those were the last months of Chet's life, because he was badly damaged due to drugs. I was shocked.

David Bowie - Sweet Thing + My Death

A David Bowie le llamaban El Camaleón. El apodo le venía por su gran facilidad para cambiar su estética y hacer incursiones en todo tipo de géneros musicales. Pero, para mí, su mayor habilidad camaleónica tiene que ver con el uso de la voz. Creo que es el cantante de rock al que más registros y matices de voz he escuchado. A veces, incluso, dentro de una misma canción, con un uso teatral, para interpretar diferentes personajes o emociones. Escuchad, a modo de ejemplo, esta "Sweet Thing". No os perdáis las evoluciones de la voz desde su entrada en el segundo 37.

David Bowie, also known as The Chameleon.  This nickname was due to his ability to change his appearance and explore different musical genres. But, in my opinion, his greatest chameleon skills is related to his voice. He is probably the rock singer with more registers and ranges of voice I've ever heard. Sometimes you can even see this variety within a song. In a dramatic way, to play different characters or emotions. For example, listen to this "Sweet Thing". Do not miss the evolution of the voice since the entry in the second 37.
