Vivaldi acompañó la partitura de "Las Cuatro Estaciones" de cuatro poemas (tal vez escritos por él). Estos son los versos que acompañan al "Verano":

mústiase hombre y rebaño y arde el pino;
lanza el cuco la voz y pronto oída
responden tórtola y jilguero al trino.

teme fiera borrasca y su destino.

Quita a los miembros laxos su reposo
el temor a los rayos, truenos fieros,

La actuación del vídeo corresponde a una de las agrupaciones más respetadas en la interpretación historicista de Vivaldi: Giuliano Carmignola (violín) y la Venice Baroque Orquestra.
Program music is a type of music that aims to evoke images in the listener's mind, musically representing a scene or mood.
Vivaldi indicated in the scores of his "Four Seasons" which musical passages were representative of which verses of four sonnets, apparently written by himself. These are the verses expressed in "The Summer":
Allegro non molto
Beneath the blazing sun's relentless heat
men and flocks are sweltering,
pines are scorched.
We hear the cuckoo's voice; then sweet songs of the turtle dove and finch are heard.
Soft breezes stir the air….but threatening north wind sweeps them suddenly aside. The shepherd trembles, fearful of violent storm and what may lie ahead.
Adagio e piano - Presto e forte
His limbs are now awakened from their repose by fear of lightning's flash and thunder's roar, as gnats and flies buzz furiously around.

Alas, his worst fears were justified, as the heavens roar and great hailstones beat down upon the proudly standing corn.
