Puccini - Tosca (Domingo)
El papel de Cavaradossi en la ópera Tosca ha sido interpretado por grandes tenores. De las versiones que he visto en vídeo me gustan mucho la de Pavarotti, la de Alagna y, sobre todo, la de Domingo. Pongo el famoso pasaje de "E lucevan le stelle", en el que Cavaradossi, esperando la hora de su ejecución, se acuerda de la última vez que pudo estar junto a su amada Tosca y se despide de la vida.
The role of Cavaradossi in the opera Tosca has been performed by great tenors. Among the versions I've seen on video, I really like Pavarotti's, Alagna's and, specially, Domingo's. Guns N' Roses - Welcome To The Jungle
Los Guns N' Roses ocuparon el trono de reyes del rock duro durante el final de los 80 y los primeros 90. Supieron fusionar y modernizar algunos sonidos de los 70 (a mí siempre me sonaron a una mezcla de Aerosmith y Sex Pistols). Gran parte de su éxito se debió también a sus formidables directos y a la publicidad que daban los continuos escándalos de los miembros de la banda.
Guns N 'Roses occupied the throne of the kings of Hard Rock during the late 80's and early 90's. They fused and modernized some 70 sounds (they sounded to me like a mix of Aerosmith and Sex Pistols). El tango es la música argentina más conocida internacionalmente. Sin embargo, esta música, que se originó en las grandes ciudades del Río de la Plata, no es ni mucho menos la música más representativa del folcklore tradicional. Sí son sin embargo tradicionales en todas las regiones de Argentina las zambas, las chacareras, o las milongas, entre otros estilos y danzas.
Feliz día de la Hispanidad, o Día del respeto a la Diversidad Cultural, o Día de las Américas, o como lo llames en tu país.

Lenny Kravitz es un músico brillante que ha conseguido captar a fans de la música de los 70 de estilos muy diversos (rock duro, funk, R&B, soul, pop, etc.). Pero, a pesar de su sonido "vintage", ha sabido incorporar elementos modernos a sus composiciones que han enganchado a audiencias de todo tipo, hasta el punto de ser uno de los artistas de rock con mayores ventas en el mundo.
Aquí dejo una actuación en directo de sus primeros años. Aparece a la batería mi admirada Cindy Blackman.

Iron Maiden - Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Es increíble que a estas alturas aún no hubiese dedicado una entrada en este blog musical a Iron Maiden. Probablemente una de las mejores y más conocidas bandas de heavy metal de la historia. Para compensar este imperdonable olvido, hoy traigo una de mis canciones favoritas (Rime Of The Ancient Mariner) de mi álbum en directo favorito de la banda (Live After Death). El tema empieza tras un discurso de introducción de 2 minutos por parte del vocalista Bruce Dickinson.

Steve Winwood ha formado parte de grandes grupos históricos, como el Spencer Davis Group, Traffic o Blind Faith (junto a dos exmiembros del supertrío Cream: Eric Clapton a la guitarra y Ginger Baker a la batería). Escuchad a este original cantante, teclista y compositor en una actuación en directo con Blind Faith en Hyde Park en 1969.

Vivaldi - The Four Seasons (Carmignola)
La música programática es la que tiene como objetivo evocar imágenes en la mente del oyente, representando musicalmente una escena o estado de ánimo.
Vivaldi acompañó la partitura de "Las Cuatro Estaciones" de cuatro poemas (tal vez escritos por él). Estos son los versos que acompañan al "Verano":
Allegro non molto
Bajo dura estación del sol ardida
mústiase hombre y rebaño y arde el pino;
lanza el cuco la voz y pronto oída
responden tórtola y jilguero al trino.
Sopla el céfiro dulce y enseguida
Bóreas súbito arrastra a su vecino;
y solloza el pastor, porque aún cernida
teme fiera borrasca y su destino.
Adagio e piano - Presto e forte
Quita a los miembros laxos su reposo
el temor a los rayos, truenos fieros,
de avispas, moscas, el tropel furioso.

His limbs are now awakened from their repose by fear of lightning's flash and thunder's roar, as gnats and flies buzz furiously around.

Dream Theater - Strange Deja Vu + Through My Words + Fatal Tragedy
En 1999 la banda de metal progresivo Dream Theater lanzó "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory". Un disco conceptual que cuenta una historia a través de las canciones, a modo de ópera rock. En la gira, la banda tocaba el disco entero ininterrumpidamente, acompañado de imágenes y actores. Dejo un vídeo con tres de esas canciones. Vale la pena verlo entero para disfrutar de los cambios de registros de esta banda de virtuosos.
Dream Theater, the progressive metal band, launched "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory" in 1999. A concept album that tells a story through the songs, like a rock opera. On the tour the band played the complete album with no interruption, with videos and actors. Watch a video of three of those songs. Worth seeing the whole video to enjoy the wide range of registers of this band of virtuosos.

Shirley Horn - If You Love Me + Foolin' Myself
Shirley Horn es para mí una especie de Jekill & Hyde dentro del Jazz. No sé qué me gusta más de ella: si sus baladas aterciopeladas o sus temas más descarados y divertidos. Otra cosa que me maravilla de ella es que alcanzaba niveles espectaculares de virtuosismo tanto con la voz como con el piano, tocando a la vez que cantaba. No sabría decir si era mejor cantante o pianista. Traeré dos canciones: una balada (John Williams dirige la orquesta) y una divertida canción con su trío de siempre.

Another thing that amazes me is that she reached spectacular levels of virtuosity both on vocals and on the piano, playing while singing. I can't say if she was better as a singer or as a pianist. I bring two songs: a ballad (John Williams conducts the orchestra) and a funny song with his trio ever.

"All Right Now" es probablemente el tema más conocido de la banda británica "Free". Hoy, sin embargo, me gustaría que escuchaseis uno de mis canciones favoritas: "Mr. Big". Un tema sostenido por la sólida batería de Simon Kirke. Y una demostración de que los silencios también son música. Paul Rodgers a la voz, Paul Kossoff a la guitarra y Andy Fraser al bajo dan muestra de su gran feeling. La actuación pertenece al mítico Festival de la Isla de Wight en el 70.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida es una mítica canción del grupo Iron Butterfly que empezó a mezclar rock psicodélico y rock duro. El tema dura 17 minutos y en su parte central incluía unos fantásticos solos de órgano, guitarra y batería. Evidentemente, tuvieron que editar también una versión corta, porque las emisoras se negaban a emitir canciones de más de 3 minutos. Algo que, dicho sea de paso, sigue ocurriendo hoy en día en mayor o menor medida.

The Allman Brothers Band - Whipping Post
Los Allman Brothers son, sin duda, unos músicos míticos. Fueron pioneros dentro del rock sureño. Excelentes compositores y grandes intérpretes. La trágica muerte de Duane Allman arrebató al mundo del rock una nueva leyenda de la guitarra, justo cuando el público empezaba a reconocer su talento (en especial tras grabar con Eric Clapton el álbum de "Derek and The Dominos"). Sin embargo, a pesar de la pérdida de uno de sus líderes, la banda no dejó de hacer excelentes álbumes y directos.
The Allman Brothers Band is, no doubt, a legendary band. They were pioneers within the Southern rock. They were excellent composers and great performers. The tragic death of Duane Allman snatched a new guitar legend from the world of Rock, just when the public began to acknowledge his talent (especially after recording with Eric Clapton's Derek and the Dominos). However, despite the loss of one of their leaders, the band continued making excellent albums and live performances.

Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue
No sabría cómo catalogar a George Gershwin. ¿Fue un compositor de jazz, de musicales para Broadway, de bandas sonoras para Hollywood, de música clásica?
Os propongo escuchar una de sus obras más significativas: Rhapsody in Blue. En la versión que traigo, Bernstein toca el piano y dirige a la Filarmónica de Nueva York. Bernstein no era un pianista virtuoso, pero da igual. Lo importante es la atmósfera que crea.

Sting es probablemente uno de los músicos más respetados a nivel mundial. No sólo por ser uno de los miembros del mítico grupo The Police, sino también por su carrera en solitario. La producción de sus discos en solitario es exquisita y me enseñó a apreciar el gusto por el buen sonido en una época en la que yo era más amante de la distorsión y la caña.

The production of his albums is exquisite and thanks to that I learned to appreciate the taste for good sound in a time in my life in which I liked above all the distortion and hard-hitting sounds.

Cactus - Evil
En los años 70 hubo una enorme densidad de buenas bandas de rock. Cactus es un buen ejemplo de esos cientos de bandas que nunca llegaron a alcanzar fama mundial a pesar de ser tan buenas o más que muchas otras que sí pasaron a la historia. Dos de los miembros del grupo, el batería Carmine Appice y el bajista Tim Bogert, ya pasaron por este blog hace mucho tiempo haciendo una versión del Superstition junto a Jeff Beck (hacer click aquí para verla). Hoy traigo un tema titulado "Evil". Sube el volumen de los altavoces al máximo.

Casi todo el mundo conoce la película "Jesucristo Superstar" de 1973. Pero pocas personas conocen que antes fue un musical en Broadway, e incluso antes un álbum grabado en 1970. De la versión cinematográfica me gusta mucho Carl Anderson (interpretando a Judas). En el álbum de 1970, sin embargo, contamos nada más ni nada menos que con Ian Gillan (cantante de Deep Purple) interpretando a Jesucristo. Os dejo una canción de cada uno de ellos a modo de ejemplo.

Dentro del mundo del jazz, se llama "estándar" o "standard" a una composición musical que suele formar parte del repertorio habitual de los músicos de jazz, que es conocida por la mayoría de ellos, suelen interpretarlo o grabarlo múltiples artistas y es conocida ampliamente por el público. Pues bien. 'Round Midnight, composición del pianista Thelonious Monk es uno de los grandes standards del jazz. En este vídeo podemos ver a Monk con su cuarteto (no te pierdas el solo de piano a partir del minuto 4).

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
"Lynyrd Skynyrd" es uno de los grupos imprescindibles del rock sureño (del sur de EEUU) de los 70. Su canción más conocida es "Sweet Home Alabama", pero yo os traigo mi favorita: "Free Bird". Una megacanción que empieza delicadamente, hablando sobre una despedida, con un espectacular slide en la guitarra y un tierno solo de piano. Pero a partir del minuto 6:50 el tema se embrutece con uno de los duetos de guitarras eléctricas más trepidantes de la historia del rock. Bestial. Os recomiendo encarecidamente que disfrutéis toda la canción de principio a fin.

Brahms - Clarinet Quintet
Mucha gente conoce las magníficas sinfonías de Brahms (la 4ª tal vez sea una de mis sinfonías favoritas de todos los tiempos). Sin embargo, hoy me apetece traer su música de cámara. El quinteto para clarinete es una maravilla. Como muestra: el segundo movimiento (entre los minutos 3 y 7 aprox. es espectacular).

Funkadelic + Parliament - Give Up The Funk + Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples
Funkadelic y Parliament eran dos bandas hermanas formadas prácticamente por los mismos músicos. De hecho, en los directos, aparecían canciones de ambas formaciones indistintamente. Eran un auténtico espectáculo en directo. Un montón de personas sobre el escenario tocando, cantando o bailando. Simplemente haciendo funk por diversión.

Léo Ferré - Avec le temps
Léo Ferré fue una de las grandes figuras de la chanson francesa. Tal vez él y Jacques Brel sean los dos intérpretes que más me han impactado en sus actuaciones en directo. Con su fuerza interpretativa es imposible no meterse en el pellejo del protagonista de la canción.

"Whiplash" es una de mis películas favoritas de 2014. Grandes interpretaciones y gran banda sonora. Os dejo dos de los temas con más protagonismo en la película: "Whiplash" y "Caravan". En ambos casos, además de la versión que aparece en la película, os pondré la versión original de ambos temas ("Whiplash" interpretado por la orquesta de Don Ellis y "Caravan" interpretado por la orquesta de Duke Ellington).

Led Zepellin + Page & Plant - Kashmir
Aunque "Kashmir" no es la canción más popular de Led Zeppelin, más de un miembro de la banda ha dicho en alguna ocasión que tal vez sea la mejor composición que hicieron. Kashmir apareció en mi disco favorito de Led Zep: Physical Graffiti, de 1975. Sin embargo os dejo una grabación más tardía, de 1979.
Although "Kashmir" is not the most popular song by Led Zeppelin, more than one member of the band has said that it's maybe their best composition. Kashmir appeared in my favorite Led Zep's album: Physical Graffiti, 1975. However I bring you a 1979 recording.

Una propina: una espectacular actuación de 1995, cuando Page y Plant se reunieron para grabar una revisión de algunos de sus temas clásicos. Para tocar Kashmir se hicieron acompañar de una orquesta tradicional egipcia que crea una fusión bellísima. Tuve el placer de disfrutar de un concierto de esa gira.
An encore: a 1995 performance, when Page and Plant reunited to record a reworking of Led Zeppelin classics. For playing Kashmir they were accompanied by an Egyptian traditional orchestra that creates a beautiful fusion. I had the pleasure of enjoying a concert within that tour.
