The Faces - Stay With Me

The Faces es un pedazo de grupo derivado del anterior Small Faces (que se disolvió cuando Marriot se fue a Humble Pie) y que incorporó a gente del Jeff Beck Group (a Rod Stewart y Ron Wood (después en los Stones)). Su sonido es setentero, pero con cierto sabor añejo, indagando en las raices del rock'n'roll. Su estilo ha inspirado a muchos grupos de todos los tiempos (Aerosmith, Black Crowes, etc.). Os pongo uno de sus clásicos.

The Faces is a fantastic group derived from the previous group Small Faces (group dissolved when Marriott went to Humble Pie). The Faces joined people from the Jeff Beck Group (Rod Stewart and Ron Wood (later in the Stones)). They had a seventies sound, but with an aged flavor, delving into the roots of rock'n'roll. Charlie Parker - Improvisation + Celerity

No existen apenas grabaciones de video de Charlie Parker. Ésta es una de las pocas que existen. Sonarán dos temas: el primero, una balada en la que toca Parker (sentado) junto al gran Coleman Hawkins (de pie); el segundo es un tema rápido en el que Parker disfruta con el batería. En ambos temas se puede ver el virtuosismo, la poética y la creatividad de un saxofonista de leyenda.

There are hardly video recordings of Charlie Parker. This is one of the few that exist. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Almost Cut My Hair

Crosby, Stills & Nash ya eran un supergrupo, pero encima fue y se les unió Neil Young. Siempre me gustó la forma "casi torpe y desafinada" de tocar la guitarra de Young, pero con una musicalidad y sentimiento muy agudos. "Almost cut my hair" fue un tema emblemático para mí en una época y galaxia muy lejana. Al final me corté el pelo y tampoco pasó nada. Al menos eso creo.

Crosby, Stills & Nash were already a supergroup, but in addition Neil Young joined them. I,ve always liked the "almost clumsy and out of tune" way Young plays guitar, but displaying a a lot of musicality and feeling. "Almost cut my hair" was a symbolic song for me a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Finally I cut my hair but nothing happened to me. I think so.

Grand Funk Railroad - I'm Your Captain

Grand Funk Railroad (Grand Funk para los amigos) es otro de mis grupos de referencia. Los llamaron" los Cream americanos", supongo que por ser un power trio de gran éxito, pero en mi opinión Grand Funk se acerca más al rock duro (al menos en sus primeros discos). Creaban un sonido denso distorsionando el bajo y la guitarra. Sus directos eran espectaculares por la energía que desplegaban y abarrotaban estadios enteros.

Grand Funk Railroad is another of my reference bands. They were called "The American Cream" because they became a power trio of great success, I suppose. But I think Grand Funk are closer to hard rock (at least in their early albums). They created a thick sound distorting bass and guitar. The concerts of this band were spectacular because of the energy deployed. Stadiums were packed.

Miklos Rozsa - Ben-Hur Soundtrack

Hoy os traigo mi banda sonora favorita de toda la historia del cine. Me cuesta mucho seleccionar sólo un fragmento. Me he decidido por la obertura (los que hicieron la película debían estar muy locos, o muy seguros de si mismos, para sentar al público en la butaca del cine, cerca de 7 minutos, escuchando una obertura con una imagen fija en la pantalla).

Jimi Hendrix - Villanova Junction (Woodstock)

Debían ser aproximadamente las 9:30 del 18 de agosto de 1969. El concierto de Jimi Hendrix cerraba el mítico Festival de Woodstock después de más de tres días ininterrumpidos de música ante más de 400.000 personas. Al legendario músico se le considera el reinventor de la guitarra eléctrica, pues revolucionó la manera de tocarla, con sonidos y técnicas que nadie había oído hasta entonces, y que marcarían el camino a los rockeros del futuro.

Hendrix estaba interpretando Purple Haze, uno de sus clásicos temas salvajes, y decidió acabarlo con una serie de geniales improvisaciones a la guitarra que se alargaron durante casi 5 minutos espectaculares. De repente, algo ocurrió. Hendrix dio un giro radical sin previo aviso y se sacó de la chistera una mágica balada con escalas y sonidos imposibles que dejarían al mundo entero con la boca abierta por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.

Rainbow - Catch the Rainbow

Rainbow es una banda grandiosa. La fundó Ritchie Blackmore (guit. de Deep Purple), que reclutó a gente como Ronnie James Dio, al cual considero el mejor cantante de rock de todos los tiempos (después suplió a Ozzy Osbourne como vocalista de Black Sabbath y más tarde tuvo una brillante carrera en solitario como DIO). “Catch the Rainbow” es un tema largo para disfrutar sin interrupciones.

En esta actuación Blackmore está soberbio con la guitarra, como una montaña rusa, pasando del sonido más salvaje al más delicado, arrastrando al espectador a lo más alto y a lo más hondo. A la batería Cozy Powell (estuvo con Jeff Beck, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, etc., y casi suple a Bonham en Led Zeppelin cuando éste murió. Ahí es nada). Ojalá algún día podamos viajar en el tiempo.

Rainbow is a magnificent band. Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage

Herbie Hancock es un pianista polifacético que le ha metido mano a todo tipo de estilos y sonidos dentro del jazz. Os pongo la canción "Maiden Voyage" (del disco del mismo nombre), para mi gusto uno de sus mejores temas. En primer lugar pondré la versión original grabada en el estudio, para que disfrutéis de la canción con toda su brillantez de sonido. Es maravilloso cómo se van sucediendo los solos de saxo, trompeta y piano, todos ellos espectaculares (el de Hubbard a la trompeta me encanta). A renglón seguido os pongo una versión en directo, para que veáis la capacidad improvisadora de Hancock sobre el escenario.

Herbie Hancock is a versatile pianist who has tinkered with all kinds of styles and sounds in jazz. I'll put the song "Maiden Voyage" (from the album of the same name), one of his best songs for my taste. Cream - Tales of Brave Ulysses

Cream es considerado un grupo pionero. Tal vez el primero al que se le puso la etiqueta de "power trio" (después ha habido muchos más en la historia del rock). Se dice que Ginger Baker fue el primero en usar doble bombo (véase en el video). Se atribuye a Eric Clapton el haber impulsado el uso del wah-wah (antes incluso que Hendrix). Jack Bruce tenía una voz magnífica y un bajo muy creativo (fundamental en los tríos, al no haber una guitarra rítmica o un teclado que den densidad al conjunto). Aquí le cantan a Ulises.

Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do

Para mí, Peter Frampton siempre será un músico (intérprete y compositor) como la copa de un pino. Tiene algunos detractores que le acusan (supongo que dolidos) de abandonar el rock (sublime cuando estuvo en Humble Pie) para venderse al pop de mediados de los 70. De cualquier forma, me encanta su voz, su forma de experimentar con la guitarra (por ejemplo, el uso del "Talk box" que se puede ver en este video), sus originales escalas y su feeling. From my point of view, Peter Frampton will always be one heck of a musician (performer and composer). He has some detractors who accuse him (I suppose they're hurt) of abandoning the rock (sublime when he was in Humble Pie) to sell out to the pop of the mid-70. The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up

Con los artistas invitados de hoy sobran las presentaciones. Si alguien no los conoce tiene que ser porque haya estado congelado en un glaciar los últimos 50 años o algo así. The Rolling Stones nos traen su descarado "Start me up" con un videoclip que no tiene desperdicio. La tabla de movimientos del Sr. Jagger es muy recomendable para mantenerse en forma.

Horace Silver - Song For My Father

El quinteto de Horace Silver interpreta su clásico "Song For My Father". Un tema con aire de bossa nova, producto de la inspiración del pianista durante un viaje por Brasil. Los diversos instrumentistas de la banda van tomando el relevo para hacer su solo. Una de las maravillas de la música es que, a veces, los astros se alinean y el grupo entra en un estado de comunión, momento en el que las improvisaciones pueden convertirse en experiencias únicas como ésta.

Judas Priest - Sinner

Aunque editaron su primer album un lustro después de que ya existiera Black Sabbath, considero a Judas Priest como otra de las formaciones inventoras del Heavy Metal. Éstos, además del aspecto musical, incorporaron al imaginario del heavy la estética de cuero negro y tachuelas. Para algunos (recuerdo una votación en los primeros 90s entre los lectores de la revista Heavy Metal) Rob Halford es considerado el mejor cantante de este estilo. ¡Cuidado con el pecador!

Magnífica banda sonora de una película de culto: Bullit. Con un estupendo Steve McQueen. Un actor, en mi opinión, poco valorado. En esta película aparece una de las secuencias de persecución de coches más famosas del cine. El que conduce el Mustang es McQueen. Nada de especialistas. La música crea un ambiente espectacular.
