El 10 de febrero os traje a Peter Frampton y el 27 a The Faces. Pues bien, Humble Pie es un grupo que formó el cantante Steve Marriott cuando abandonó Small Faces (grupo que pasó a llamarse The Faces desde ese momento, entrando Rod Stewart como nuevo vocalista). Marriott se hizo acompañar, entre otros, de Peter Frampton (que más tarde, como vimos, iniciaría su carrera en solitario). Aquí os dejo con una versión brutal de "I don't need no doctor" en uno de sus ensordecedores conciertos. La voz de Marriott es genial, Frampton lo borda con sus originales escalas y el grupo entero desprende energía como para poner en marcha un par de centrales nucleares.
The last 10th of February I put on Peter Frampton's music and the 27th some of The Faces. David Bowie is a complete artist: musician, composer, actor, etc. The way he sings has been imitated by many people. His androgynous-glam aesthetics shocked at first and after was also copied. When I listened to Bowie for the first time, the originality of the first song on the album surprised me, then it did the second one, then the third song and so on until the end of the album. I heard the next album and I was amazed again. All songs were original, different and high quality. Certainly, Bowie is a cultural icon of the twentieth century.

Nunca los había escuchado y recuerdo que los encontré más suaves de lo que me esperaba viendo las pintas de los músicos. En ciertas canciones no hacían siquiera rock-duro, sino simplemente rock'n'roll. Me quedaba hipnotizado mirando aquellas agujitas moverse de izquierda a derecha. "Alchemy" es un discazo de cabo a rabo y cuesta mucho seleccionar una canción. Os traigo la canción "Tunnel of love". Si no conoces este tema, no te lo pierdas de principio a fin y disfruta de los diferentes pasajes hasta llegar al climax guitarrístico final.
The first time I listened to the album "Alchemy" (I think it was probably the first time I listened to the group "Dire Straits") it was in a summer at home of an uncle of mine. He had one of those wonderful silver stereos that came with VU meters with an orange background light. I was hypnotized looking at those small needles moving from left to right. "Alchemy" is a great album from beginning to end and it's hard to select a song. I bring the theme "Tunnel of Love". If you do not know this, do not miss it from start to finish and enjoy the passages until you reach the ending guitar climax.

Johnny Winter se ha movido a lo largo de su carrera entre el blues tejano de sabor añejo (con un manejo del "slide" prodigioso), pasando por versiones salvajes (por ejemplo de temas de los Rolling o de clásicos del blues) y llegando también a hacer un blues-rock eléctrico de alto voltaje. Aquí os pongo un video con una calidad de sonido regularcita, pero la captura es una joya que nos permite apreciar el virtuosismo y la velocidad del músico albino. Y eso que, como dice el que ha colgado el vídeo, Winter todavía no está entonado y no está más que calentando los dedos en el tema de apertura del concierto. Johnny Winter has moved along his career ranging from the old flavored blues from Texas (prodigious use of the "slide guitar") to the high-voltage electric blues-rock, including wild covers (eg covers of classic blues themes, or songs by The Rolling Stones...). I'll post a video with an average sound quality, but the recording is a real gem that allows the virtuosity and speed of the albino musician to be appreciated. Even though, according to the person who uploaded the video, Winter is just warming up his fingers in the opening theme of the concert.
Soundgarden fue metido dentro del saco del grunge. Un saco que nunca comprendí, porque Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, etc. tenían poco en común musicalmente. Yo personalmente siempre sentí predilección por Pearl Jam y Soundgarden, tal vez porque enraizaban más con el hard rock de los 70. A Soundgarden concretamente siempre le he encontrado un aroma de Black Sabbath. Chris Cornell, el vocalista del grupo, es considerado por muchos una de las mejores voces contemporáneas.

Este tema que os traigo tiene un ritmillo bluesero vacilón que me gusta mucho. A lo mejor he visto demasiado cine clásico, pero escuchando esta canción me entran ganas de irme a buscar garitos de billar (claro, que tendrían que ser en blanco y negro y estar llenos de humo de tabaco, y ninguna de esas dos cosas es posible hoy en día).

Sin duda Frank Zappa fue un músico de otro planeta. Su personalísimo estilo no puede dejar indiferente: o te gusta mucho o no te gusta nada. Es lo que tienen los músicos tan radicalmente originales y diferentes a todo. Las letras irreverentes, obscenas y combativas no tienen parangón en la lírica del rock de los 70 (vamos, que era muy bestia). Aquí os lo traigo en directo, con su "I'm the slime" de su disco Over-Nite Sensation. Ya os pondré más cosas de Zappa (avisaré previamente si hay contenidos duros).
No doubt Frank Zappa was a musician from another planet. His personal style leaves no one indifferent: either you love or you don't like at all. That's the way it goes when a musician is so radically original and different. The irreverent, obscene and combative lyrics are unmatched in the lyricism of the 70s rock (well, I mean he was very rude). This post contains a live performance of "I'm the Slime" from his album Over-Nite Sensation. It will bring you more things about Zappa in the future (I will notify in advance if contents are suitable for all audiences).
David Coverdale fue el cantante de una de las épocas más brillantes de Deep Purple. Después fundó su propia banda: Whitesnake. Esta banda empezó haciendo un rock duro con ciertos aromas de rythm'n'blues. Entrados en los 80 rozaron el glam-heavy, con canciones más comerciales, sus pelitos cardados y esas cosas. Ojo porque al teclado está Jon Lord y a la batería Ian Paice (ambos ex-Deep Purple). David Coverdale was the lead singer during one of the most brilliant eras of Deep Purple. He afterwards founded his own band: Whitesnake. This band began making hard rock with some aromas of rythm'n'blues. Well into the 80s they bordered on glam-heavy, making music with a more commercial style, backcombed hairs and stuff. Below I'll post a theme from the early days of Whitesnake (my favorite), taken from an album called Ready and Willing. Attention, because Jon Lord plays the keyboard and Ian Paice plays the drums (both ex-Deep Purple).
Un poco de ópera. Ésta me trae buenos recuerdos porque me la grabó en una cinta de casete mi seño de música en el instituto. Es un fragmento ("O mio babbino caro") de la ópera "Gianni Schicchi" de Puccini. Me gusta el tono juguetón de la cantante (Matthews) intentando persuadir al padre, en comparación con otras versiones más serias a cargo de otras cantantes. Efectivamente, es muy habitual en la música clásica que los diferentes intérpretes den su toque personal a las obras, a veces incluso saltándose las pautas del compositor en la partitura. Para comparar, os pongo la versión de Te Kanawa que apareció en la banda sonora de "Una habitación con vistas".
A bit of opera. This one brings me good memories because my teacher of music at high school recorded it for me on a cassette tape. It is a fragment ("O Mio Babbino Caro") from the opera "Gianni Schicchi" by Puccini. I like the playful tone of the singer (Matthews) trying to persuade the father, compared to other more serious versions by other singers. "On the road again" es una gran canción. Admito que nunca escuché nada más de sus autores (Canned Heat). Pero escuchando este tema te entran ganas de comprarte un camión y recorrer una larga carretera por el desierto. Incluso se oye ininterrumpidamente de fondo una especie de arpegio de guitarra que suena como el eje de transmisión de un gran camión en contínuo movimiento.
"On the road again" is a great song. I admit that I never heard anything else by the authors (Canned Heat). But listening to this theme it makes you want to buy a truck and travel a long road through the desert. If you pay attention, you can even hear a sort of uninterrupted arpeggio guitar that sounds like the drive shaft of a large truck in continuous motion.
Simplemente porque lleva más años acumulados en AC/DC, a casi todo el mundo le resulta más familiar el cantante bajito de la gorra (el fantástico Brian Johnson), pero algunos pensamos que los mejores temas del grupo se hicieron en la época en que cantaba el tristemente desaparecido Bon Scott. The Faces is a fantastic group derived from the previous group Small Faces (group dissolved whenMarriottwent toHumblePie). The Faces joined people from the Jeff Beck Group (Rod Stewart and Ron Wood (later in the Stones)). They had a seventies sound, but with an aged flavor, delving into the roots of rock'n'roll. Their style has inspired many groups of all time (Aerosmith, Black Crowes, etc.). I will play one of their classics.

There are hardly video recordings of Charlie Parker. This is one of the few that exist. You will hear two themes: first, a ballad in which Parker plays (seated) together with the great Coleman Hawkins (standing), the second is a fast song in which Parker enjoys watching the drummer play. "Almost cut my hair" was a symbolic song for me a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Finally I cut my hair but nothing happened to me. I think so.
Grand Funk Railroad (Grand Funk para los amigos) es otro de mis grupos de referencia. Los llamaron" los Cream americanos", supongo que por ser un power trio de gran éxito, pero en mi opinión Grand Funk se acerca más al rock duro (al menos en sus primeros discos). Creaban un sonido denso distorsionando el bajo y la guitarra. Sus directos eran espectaculares por la energía que desplegaban y abarrotaban estadios enteros.
Grand Funk Railroad is another of my reference bands. They were called "The American Cream" because they became a power trio of great success, I suppose. But I think Grand Funk are closer to hard rock (at least in their early albums). They created a thick sound distorting bass and guitar. The concerts of this band were spectacular because of the energy deployed. Stadiums were packed.

El concierto de Jimi Hendrix cerraba el mítico Festival de Woodstock después de más de tres días ininterrumpidos de música ante más de 400.000 personas. Al legendario músico se le considera el reinventor de la guitarra eléctrica, pues revolucionó la manera de tocarla, con sonidos y técnicas que nadie había oído hasta entonces, y que marcarían el camino a los rockeros del futuro.
Hendrix estaba interpretando Purple Haze, uno de sus clásicos temas salvajes, y decidió acabarlo con una serie de geniales improvisaciones a la guitarra que se alargaron durante casi 5 minutos espectaculares. De repente, algo ocurrió. Hendrix dio un giro radical sin previo aviso y se sacó de la chistera una mágica balada con escalas y sonidos imposibles que dejarían al mundo entero con la boca abierta por los siglos de los siglos. The concert of Jimi Hendrix closed the legendary Woodstock Festival after more than three days of uninterrupted music in front of more than 400,000 concertgoers. La fundó Ritchie Blackmore (guit. de Deep Purple), que reclutó a gente como Ronnie James Dio, al cual considero el mejor cantante de rock de todos los tiempos (después suplió a Ozzy Osbourne como vocalista de Black Sabbath y más tarde tuvo una brillante carrera en solitario como DIO). “Catch the Rainbow” es un tema largo para disfrutar sin interrupciones.
En esta actuación Blackmore está soberbio con la guitarra, como una montaña rusa, pasando del sonido más salvaje al más delicado, arrastrando al espectador a lo más alto y a lo más hondo. Rainbow is a magnificent band. Founded by Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple guit.), who recruited people as Ronnie James Dio, which I consider the best rock singer of all time (then he supplied Ozzy Osbourne as vocalist of Black Sabbath, and later he had a brilliant solo career as DIO). "Catch the Rainbow" is a long song to enjoy without interruption.
In this performance Blackmore is superb on guitar, like a roller coaster, from the wildest sound to the most delicate, dragging the audience to the highest and the deepest. Cozy Powell on drums, (he played with Jeff Beck, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, etc., and he was about to replace Bonham in Led Zeppelin when the latter died. No less no more). Hopefully one day we'll be able to time travel.
Herbie Hancock es un pianista polifacético que le ha metido mano a todo tipo de estilos y sonidos dentro del jazz. Os pongo la canción "Maiden Voyage" (del disco del mismo nombre), para mi gusto uno de sus mejores temas. En primer lugar pondré la versión original grabada en el estudio, para que disfrutéis de la canción con toda su brillantez de sonido. Es maravilloso cómo se van sucediendo los solos de saxo, trompeta y piano, todos ellos espectaculares (el de Hubbard a la trompeta me encanta). A renglón seguido os pongo una versión en directo, para que veáis la capacidad improvisadora de Hancock sobre el escenario.
Herbie Hancock is a versatile pianist who has tinkered with all kinds of styles and sounds in jazz. I'll put the song "Maiden Voyage" (from the album of the same name), one of his best songs for my taste. In the first place, I'll put the original version recorded in the studio, so you can enjoy the song in all its sound brilliance. It's wonderful how the solos follow one another (saxophone, trumpet and piano), spectacular all of them (I love Hubbard's solo on trumpet). Tiene algunos detractores que le acusan (supongo que dolidos) de abandonar el rock (sublime cuando estuvo en Humble Pie) para venderse al pop de mediados de los 70. Magnífica banda sonora de una película de culto: Bullit. Con un estupendo Steve McQueen. Un actor, en mi opinión, poco valorado. En esta película aparece una de las secuencias de persecución de coches más famosas del cine. El que conduce el Mustang es McQueen. Nada de especialistas. La música crea un ambiente espectacular.
Gorgeous soundtrack of a cult movie: Bullit. With a great Steve McQueen. In my opinion, an underrated actor. In this film we can see one of the most famous car chase sequences of the history of cinema. McQueen is who drives the Mustang. No stuntmen. The music creates a spectacular atmosphere.
